I really had no plans to fish sat, but i woke up at 2:30 am and could not fall back asleep.
So i grab a cup off coffee , check the local tides and find a text from my bro Seabass ,stating
that he will be on the water around 7 ish at Dana Point.. What the hell solo again in the lil keywest..
So i boogie down to DP ,drop the boat in and cruise to our meeting spot and load up with some mackies ..
Its now a lil after 6am and the rods are out.
As I am creating my new method of a disposable chum sock technique loaded with fresh fish and fish oil, I noticed the 60lb rod start bouncing with a fly lined mackerel pinned to it.
Quickly rinse my paws off and pick it up.
Good timing , now the reel starts screaming my favorite tune, zzzzzzzzzzzz
I gradually add some drag to set the 7/0 circle hook and its game on.
First run is out and up into the air with a large splash .
now MR or Mrs "T" is headed out to sea and deep.
This gives me just enough time to clear the second rod out and prepare for battle.
After getting back some needed line on the reel, i am now over the top of this fish, but it is still deep/ no color. and then it happens..another hook pulled...arggg..
So i quickly reset both rods again and start working the same area..
About an hour later, while slow trolling i see a couple large boils off my port side and proceed to give it a look.
As soon as i go over the area i noticed a huge ball up of bait down about 30 feet,so i cruise past. stop the boat and let the weighted 40 lb rod sink in to it..
Now the 40 lb rod is getting very nervous , and so i put the boat back in gear and
shhhmack/zzz tail slap...
I pick up the 40, leave the clicker on and start feeding out line..
my mackie gets picked up, and as before start adding drag to set the 6/0 circle hook.
Sweeeet I am on again..
This time the Shark makes a quick slashing across the surface and wraps up the 60 lb rod
and both reels are screaming out my tune zzzzzzz / zzzzzz .
Now i am screwed....
and before to long the 40 lb snaps but the 60lb is still blazing out line..
so i clear the 40 lb, pick up the 60 lb and continue to add pressure to this fish.
It did not take long for me to loose it again...
and when i wound up the fishless 60 lb, i find the remnents of my 40 lb leader and hook all balled up 30 yards out... cut and retie both rods and re deploy, but these 2 threshers would be all the fish gods would offer me for the day..
It is days like this that make me wanna golf more..lol
Water temp was 68 to 69 deg.
Some areas clean green
and the water i like, murkey green for sharks
Flat calm in the am, with little to no breeze or swell untill about noon
water depth worked best between 60' to 100'.
right off the point and a little south was the area today
Best of luck out there people !!
Now where are my golf clubs ??
