After taking care of some family business on Tuesday morning, saw it was a nice day not too much wind. Packed up some gear, rods, generator, light, Crowder and such and hauled butt for Catalina. Absolutely great ride across, slight bump with very light winds. Water  in the channel was 67*, deep blue, looking better.30 plus mph the whole way. Stopped for some lunch at Parson’s Landing, a new friend in a beautiful Blackfin sport fisher (Dog House) from Dana Point pulled over to me and gave me about ¾ of a scoop of squid he said that they did not need. A BIG shout out to him in that neighborhood.  Caught a couple of Calicos with it then made my way around the backside.

Lunch at anchor looking west

couple of Callies

There were a dozen light boat on anchor with more seiners headed across.  Scoped some squid, anchored up and started jigging it in the daylight. First couple of pieces went to a dropper loop and a slider rig. Made about 50 pieces before moving to a kelpline to try for a WSB in the waning light. Current was all screwed up, only thing I got was 2 small shovelnose sharks and a calico. Backside water temp is 64*.

Headed around back into the coming sundown

Fought like a short wsb, had me a thinkin

Headed back to the front to catch a few zzzzz’s because the seiners were working the squid beds so hard I figured any exotics’ would have hi tailed it. Woke up at 3:30 am, my dropper loop ins bent over, jump up but it turned out to be a small dadadadadadadadada BATRAY . Put everything away, pulled anchor and headed back around. The seiners were done and going back to the mainland in ones and twos. Started to meter around, found some nice looking marks in 65 to 75 feet of water on a little ridge, so I dropped the anchor at 4:45 am. Got out the rigs, put a dropper loop on one side , a well thawed chum bucket off the back and watched for a couple of minutes. Lots of seals around but I heard a splash that didn’t sound like one of them. Grabbed a 50# kelpcutter rig with 50# fluorocarbon leader, ½ oz. slider with a 7/0 red octopus hook. First cast and its bit on the fall. Set the hook and bring in a legal Cuda. I like Cuda on the squid grounds because the WSB stay with them a lot, or the other way around, I don’t know. The time was 5am and the next 3 cast were all hit, bit, set, fought and landed in succession. Each so quick in a row that I never got the fish into the kill locker. At 5:18 I had my 3rd WSB on the boat. The weight 22#24# and 27#. Man was I stoked. There were 2 other sport-yachts fishing, but they were asleep or in the cabin so I aroused them and told them it was game on. Decided not to try for yellows and headed home before the sun came up.

Seiners all gone

First one, so I took a little time
