Met up with D4L in Los Alamitos at midnight for a run up the line to look for some late season Ghosts. Got some squid at San Pedro Bait, Thanks Mike, headed out and up towards Palos Verdes and Hermosa Beach area. There was a slight south wind blowing, not as bad as last weekend in the dark. As we rounded Point Vicente, the land mass blocked the wind. We pulled up in 85 feet of water that was 66* at 2:45 am in front of the power station at Hermosa. We were the only boat there, but there were thousands of gulls and terns working all around us. Since the wind was a little stronger here, and I had yet to set up the generator and squid light we started with a drift. Within minutes we had squid up under the boat with just the deck lights. My dropper loop goes bent, and after a few minutes I bring up the first Bat Ray of the night. We reset and put the anchor out in 78 feet of water, fired up the squid light and went to work.  After a few more Bat rays each, 5 Yakkers come paddling out to the area. We called them over and baited them all up as we had a great float all around us. Just before sunrise we called the area quits after a dozen or so of the wing’d ones were released. We moved to a kelp line by Haggerty”s, but the wind had us pointed in the wrong direction, stern towards the open ocean. We each caught a couple of pencil cuda, I got a Sandie then D4L hooked up to a big fish. After a few minutes and 1 time around the boat I release a 90 to 100 lb Black Sea Bass. Not what we were hoping for but a nice battle.

We move to Point Vicente, but the current is uphill and so is the wind which doesn’t work for us well there so on down to a little kelp line we call Oscars. Drop the hook in 50 ft of 64.5* clean water running uphill. Had a real nice edge of kelp running away from us for 60 feet +. Started the chum line with a bucket of frozen chipper squid. The  mackerel started to build up behind the boat and a few Calicos wanted to come aboard for photos.

Saw a big fish flash thru the chum chasing a bait fish but could tell what is was. I get another bite, set the hook on a bigger grade Calico. Work  it out of the kelp and it runs to the boat then down with surprising strength. A couple of headshakes an now I am thinking. Up to the surface pops a small WSB. In my haste I bounce it up onto the Center con and steering wheel , remove the hook and measure it. 29 inches.

D4L and I bait back up, send out or offerings along with about 20 unescorted free-swimming squid. D4l gets bit, is feeding it a little, I get picked up we both set the hook, and we are on. My fish runs to the port side just like the WSB before while D4L’s fights a straight up and down fight. I bounce mine on board again as does D4l. Only difference is mine is another 29 inch WSB while D4L gets ajust legal lingcod.

We both bait up again and send them out with more free-swimmers. D4l gets bit, right kind. Gets it to the boat to see it’s a short, 24 inches. More chum, shakin the bucket and free swimmies. I get hammered again, this time D4L gets the big net and brings my limit fish onboard, 31 incher.

D4l is on his own now as I continue to work the chum. He hooks up again, another short WSB.  The current turns around a shuts off the whole deal. It was a long day for both of us. The Bat Rays and BSB worked us both. The local WSB’s were a nice ending with a good friend. Next time you will get them D4l. You were just 8 feet away. Totals – D4L – 1 lingcod, 2 Calicos, 1 BSB, 2 Cuda, 2 rockfish and a handful of Bat Rays. Berzerker – 1 Sandbass, 3 Calicos, 3 WSB, 2 Cuda and a handful of Bat Rays.

It's that simple, 8' to the west and getting lingcod and reds watching the WSB going over the rail for Bezerker. Thats fishing and it keeps us coming back for more.

That 8' has been a ass kicker for a long time. Hanging tuff and enjoying every minute. Homer were are you?

Recovering step by step, 20 years clean.
