Met up with Doper4life at 4am in Los Alamitos. The wind was calm at the ramp, looked like the storm had blown thru thankfully. Up to San Pedro for bait, Thanks for the squid Mike. Out of the harbor and up the line to Rocky Point. Seas still were confused, with some steep -faced chunks making the ride up a little slower . Stopped at our first spot in the dark, water was 59*. Didn’t look good, 4* cooler than the weeks prior so off we go further around the corner in search of. As we progressed around the point, the water kept getting warmer little by little. Pulled up in Haggerty”s , the temp was 63* and very clean. We started the chum line and were rewarded with a slow pick at a few species, Sheephead, Opaleye and Calicos. D4L got 3 Calicos as did I. Some of them were very nice quality fish, but no WSB were seen or caught.

We  ran back around to our 1st spot to check it out, current was right but the temp was still cold. We anchored up, started a heavy chum line and started fishing. Nothing, not even a Calico. As the late morning breeze was picking up, Doper4Life and I talked ourselves into running back to the harbor to try the Halibut/ Thresher combo troll.  Hoping to find a little clean water we were pleasantly surprised to see a lot of good looking green water in the harbor with only small amounts of the red stuff.  Had spent most of my free time this week going thru the mess I call Halibut gear getting it straight, making new rigs and such so I opted to only put out Bounce ball gear. This was at about 10:30am. Doper4Life put out both BB gear and a Thresher rig. Soon I was rewarded with a 23 inch keeper that I bounced onto the boat.

Put that rig back in and set up another for the bow rodholder, all untested new dodger rigs. We work our way around the area for another pair of short fist and one that measured 22 inches but was released without photos. The wind was quickly becoming a factor, with whitecaps in the harbor so we had to adjust the trolling to quartering diagonal with the wind, We were talking that we have not had a Halibut bit on the troll for a while on the bow rod that pinned it to the rail, then it happened to my bow rod. The fish ran under the boat on its first run, making it difficult for me to get the rod out of the holder, then work the rod down the rail under the other rigs till we clear. The boat never goes out of gear and the rigs stay in, which can make for some interesting fights unless a Thresher hits, then everything gets cleared. I bring the flattie up to the port rail and D4L does a great gaff job. On the boat with a 34 inch fish, Hi 5s, oh yeah.

Take a photo or two then get that gear back in. A couple of zigs and zags  later I see my long rod unload a little. I put the reel in freespool; take the rod out of the holder and can feel a fish eating it. The fish turns and runs, I put it into gear and load up the rod. Fish on. It does a good run straight off the back then settles in to some good headshakes. I bring it up to the boat and D4L puts a great shot on it for me. A real nice 30 inch fish, Hi 5s again.

We try for a while longer but got no more biters except for lizardfish. We were off the water about 2pm, talked to a bunch of friends at the washdown. Happy Ending to a good day with friends.
