So I'm getting ready to pull my boat out to get bottom paint and some minor repairs done.  So I take the boat out for my last little harbor cruse and I lose power in my star board motor,  feels like it's just a fouled spark plug or 2.  I take Monday off from work so I can get her fixed before I have to pull the boat out in the afternoon.  First I pull out all my spark plugs and do a compression test only to find out that I have 1 dead cylinder,
Shit!!!!  So I take off the valve cover and discover I have a broken valve spring.  I talk to few mechanics, some say time for a valve job at about $ 6,500.00 What? no FN way.
Some say the valve might be ok,  I like this better so I get a valve spring puller and rent an air compressor.  You take the air compressor and an adapter that fits inside the spark plug hole and turn it on..When the exhaust and intake valve is closed the air should not leak out.  If it does the piston or valve is done.  Mine held so know I just need to get the spring off.  With the puller it comes right off, while the air is still being compressed so that the valve doesn't fall down into the cylinder if it does your toast...   luckily mine goes off without a problem.  I fine tune the rocker arm by hand turning the crank and adjusting the tension in the push rod.  Next I recheck the compression and it's the same as all the other cylinders.  I close her up, fire her up and she runs like a champ.  Valve spring from Hub Auto $ 4.00, Air compressor
rental $ 25.00, new spark plugs about $ 27.00  Saving myself from having to do a complete rebuild...PRICELESS...
