I am always bringing heavy gear "just in case" and as it would turn out today as I'm fishing @ the 14 for monster rockfish (shhhhhh)  Mr & Mrs. mako performed their usual acrobatics less than 100 yrds in front of me... I know what they were snacking on ;-)  but as I reached for my avet - - shiat, damn , piss...   anywho...

2 Makos - 4-6ft & the other maybe to 8ft
water temp = 62.06
water color = blue-ish green..

FYI - -Major case of red tide outside newportharbor this afternoon..

Great White Sharks at Catalina
Posted On 03/25/08 02:27 PM

I just heard there was a confirmed visual on 3 great white sharks @ catalina this last week.  They ranged form 16-18 feet long!

Hopefully they will clear out some of the furry bastards that interfere with our fishing!

New Shimano Lucanus Jig
Posted On 03/11/08 11:07 PM

I got to see the new Lucanus rockfish jigs today. They look like something that would catch more fisherman than fish, but Shimano swears that whatever works for the Japanese fisherman must work for us in Socal.

The problem I have is the Lucanus Jig costs $15-$17 and could get caught up on the rocks pretty easily. A double dropper loop with some squid costs $5 for the entire trip an produces everytime. Split that x 5 people and it only costs me $1. Also like the butterfly jig, Shimano wants you to use the "Lucanus System" which includes, a new rod, reel, hooks and you must wear the Shimano jacket to make it all work!

If you don't believe me see it for yourself:

Today March 1 is the season opener for rockfish here is socal. Unfortunately the weather kept us off the water today as the santa ana winds blew like I have not seen in a while.

I know a great spot for these guys!

Sculpin on the chew!
Posted On 02/20/08 08:29 PM

Hey look - -  I know it's boring but nothing else is really on the chew - - - (except the local WSB...... )

Find the newport pipe around 140ft and throw down the double dropper loop with some dead calamari or a piece of ballpark hot dog - -

Either way - you're on!

Watch the weather , it's gonna be nasty......

If you have not used nowCoast from NOAA it's certainly worth a look... I personally like it because I can overlay all of the weather conditions including: surface temps, winds, currents, etc... all in 1 picture..
